Shooting During the Golden Hour For More Breathtaking Shots

In video production, there are many types of lights that you have to factor in and deal with in planning your scenes and shots; yet many filmmakers and photographers would agree that there is one type of light that rules above all others… and that is called Golden Light.

Golden Light is captured just after sunrise, and right before sunset – a short period of time which we call “The Golden Hour”. What makes it so fascinating is how the sunlight spreads across the sky while having the sun near the horizon which reduces the intensity of light, resulting in a unique reddish, orange glow. The richness of the golden hour light can give any outdoor shot a warm and comforting look and feel.

Here are a couple of reasons why we love shooting our films during golden hour:

Did we mention that it gives a warm look and feel? 🙂

Warmer tones tend to be more flattering on people (which is probably why bronzing and tanning has become such a thing with women).

It’s dimensional.

Golden hour light produces more directional light which is caused by the low angle from which it comes from. Shadows become longer and softer than during the peak of the day, which makes shots more interesting and dynamic.

So how do you prepare for the golden hour ahead of time?

With the internet being an open source for just about anything, our team uses online tools to help us identify golden hour, regardless where we have to shoot; yet don’t just rely on that. Once you get on location, keep your eyes peeled for light activity throughout the day.

Since golden hour is such a prime time, make sure to plan your shots ahead so you won’t end up rushing. Schedule talent and clients appropriately to take advantage of the light.
